Watch William's story
Meet William
This is William. When he was born, there were no indicators that anything might be wrong. Until, when he was 6 weeks old, his parents noticed he wasn’t meeting some of his key milestones.
Around his first birthday, William was diagnosed with level 4 cerebral palsy, the second most severe categorisation, affecting his mobility, swallowing and ability to communicate.
With the physical challenges of his cerebral palsy, William can’t hold most standard toys, let alone play with them. The only toys in regular shops that he can engage with are for babies. At nearly 4 years old, these toys can’t contribute meaningfully to his development.
He has so much potential but without access to appropriate technology, it will be left unrealised.
This year, William will be able to experience the magic of Christmas, thanks to switch toys, an assistive technology that will not only enable him to participate fully in play, but also learn and communicate with his family.
Switch toys transform futures
Switch toys are an assistive technology that allow children with CP to use whatever voluntary control they have to play, communicate, increase their mobility, develop vital neural pathways, gain more independence and participate fully in life.
William activates his switch using his hands. With it, he is able to operate games on his iPad as well as create magic with his beloved bubble machine. Crucially, it means that he is able to participate fully in play and learning, both independently and with his older brother Lachie.
As he gets older, the toys he can use with his switch will grow with him, aiding his development. The possibilities are limitless.
“To see him play and enjoy himself, to see that big smile on his face and hear him laughing – it just warms your heart, it’s infectious.”
– Chris, William’s Dad
Meet some inspiring young kids!
Aidyn
Born just shy of 23 weeks, Aidyn is now a happy, cheeky, and funny kid. He lives with severe cerebral palsy, and is making amazing progress with the support of CPA therapies like Telepractice sessions and physiotherapy, to get ready for his first year of school.
Christopher
Christopher has defied the odds and surprises everyone around him with this strength, determination, will to live and capacity to love. Born at 37 weeks after suffering brain damage in the womb due to CMV, Christopher has severe CP, is non-verbal, and has no control over his limbs.
