Billy's Story

Meet Billy

The first few days of Billy’s life were terrifying. The morning after his birth, nurses noticed that he wasn’t breathing properly, and he was going downhill fast. Before they even had time to celebrate the birth of their baby boy, Leanne and Ben had to watch doctors intubate Billy and prepare him to be flown to a specialist hospital.

After extensive tests, Billy was flagged at risk of cerebral palsy. Within weeks, Leanne and Ben were connected with CPA. They were determined to ensure he received the crucial early intervention therapies vital for his development. However, they grappled with the daunting financial burden it might impose on their family. Without these interventions, Billy’s ability to communicate and move independently could be severely compromised. It’s a heart-wrenching dilemma no parent should ever face.

That’s when they were introduced to the Big Steps Fund, and everything changed. Billy already beat the odds by surviving, but now Leanne and Ben get to watch him build new skills and discover the joys of play and learning.

Billy beat the odds by surviving. Now, he’s meeting new milestones every day thanks to the early intervention therapy you made possible.

Early intervention is life-changing

Babies’ brains develop more rapidly in the first 1000 days of their life than at any other time in their life. For babies with cerebral palsy, like Billy, accessing early intervention therapy during this time is crucial to developing communication, motor and problem-solving skills, and learning to participate meaningfully in the world around them. However, the cost of these services can be overwhelming for families.

That’s where The Big Steps Fund, powered by generous donors like you, comes in and helps to cover the cost of early intervention therapy for babies just like Billy, when it will have the greatest impact.

Now, almost two years old, Billy’s future is looking bright. He’s working with his team to move from sitting to crawling to standing and making huge progress with his speech therapist. Recently, he’s been learning to communicate independently through keyword signing and assistive technology – things his parents worried may never happen.

There are so many babies waiting for the same opportunity to flourish. YOU have the power to help them.

“What do we wish? We wish that he has independence later in life and that he can do it happily. That’s it.”

– Ben, Billy’s Dad
